Brand Highlights

Olive Oil has been listed as one of the top oils in the world and is associated with many health benefits. Gundry MD® Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil is packed with thirty (30) times the normal amount of plant based ingredients on the market and is highly sought after because of the way it is processed. This is due to the fact that the olives used to make the product are sourced from the Moroccan dessert which is renowned for its high polyphenol count.

Gundry MD® Organic Olive Oil is a USDA product and brainchild of Dr. Steven Gundry, celebrated Cardiovascular Surgeon and Author. The Product was developed because he wanted to take the already powerful antioxidants in regular olive oil and kick things up a notch to make it more effective.

Dr. Gundry founded his brand in 2001, while he was the Head of Cardiovascular Surgery at Loma Linda University where he was asked to treat a chronically ill, overweight man who was deemed a hopeless case that could not be helped with surgery. He soon discovered that the patient was somehow able to reverse his heart threatening symptoms with a combination of natural and dietary nutrients. This motivated Dr. Gundry to investigate further and he was on a quest to find natural solutions on his own – what he found was unmistakable which led directly to the start of the Gundry MD brand.

In his Philosophy, Dr Gundry has expressed that:

True health only happens when you’re living in a state of cooperation with the trillions of tiny microbes that live everywhere in, on and around your body

which was the main driver behind his product.

In 2002 he founded the Centre for Restorative Medicine where he spent fourteen (14) years studying the human microbiome where he developed the principles of Holobiotics that has helped countless men and women.

How Does Gundry MD Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil Work?

Gundry MD Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil is similar to other olive oil brands on the market, however, it has a slightly bitter taste and more robust flavor. This is something that takes getting used to as it’s definitely an acquired taste. However, when it comes to your health, taste is the least of your concern for something that offers long-term benefits. Also, as per research, olive oil might apparently aid in tissue regeneration and wound healing.

One of the main ingredients is Polyphenols (which we will talk about more in the ingredients section of the review) that protects against heart disease and several diseases. In short, Polyphenols are a micronutrient that give plants their color and also protect them from harm. This is better explained in a study by Kanti Booshan titled “Plant polyphenols as dietary antioxidants in human health and disease” :

Towards the end of the 20th century, epidemiological studies and associated meta-analyses strongly suggested that long term consumption of diets rich in plant polyphenols offered some protection against development of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative diseases

When ingested, they offer protection against free radicals which are molecules associated with cancer. It is easy to use Gundry MD® Organic Olive Oil and all you have to do is take it as a shot in a small glass or a tablespoon, it can be sprinkled over the top of your food, added to your favorite salad as a dressing or pour into a smoothie or any other beverages you drink on a regular basis.

Unlike other supplements, there are no specific rules for how you take it, just treat it the same way you would do any olive oil you purchase from the store.

Gundry MD Olive Oil Ingredients

Dr Gundry olive oil is an organic, extra virgin olive oil that is rich in nutrients because of its ingredients. The product features a combination of natural ingredients and different types that is expected for any oil based products.

For this, Dr Gundry olive oil review, we’ve picked the three (3) ingredients that make this product stand out from other similar products on the market.

Saturated Fat:

These are a single-bond dietary fat found in foods like beef, pork, poultry, oils as well as dairy products. Saturated Fats tend to increase cholesterol levels in the blood. Though it is not always clear on what we should or shouldn’t be eating to improve our heart health, it is important to note there are different types of saturated fats.

In Olive Oil for example, the Saturated fat may improve the appearance of skin when ingested on a consistent basis – on the other side of this, if you take more than the required amount, it can lead to weight gain.

There are numerous types of saturated fats such as small, medium, and long-chain saturated fats and different types of polyunsaturated fats.

The right amount of saturated fats in oil based products is better explained in a study by James J, Nicolantonio titled

Monounsaturated Fat vs Saturated Fat: Effects on Cardio-Metabolic Health and Obesity.

The study makes reference to the Kanwu Study that assigned 162 healthy people from five different countries to a high diet in Saturated Fat or Unsaturated Fat. Those who had a diet of 37% of saturated fat saw no significant change in insulin sensitivity and those on a low saturated fat diet of 12.5% were better on the Unsaturated Fat diet.

This tells us that the results will vary, depending on your lifestyle choices, your current health and your portion size. Saturated Fats account for 15% of the ingredients in Gundry MD® Organic Olive Oil.

Polyunsaturated Fat:

Polyunsaturated Fat, unlike Saturated fat, has a double molecule bond. It is deemed as one of the healthy fats that promotes good cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart disease and maintains healthy cells. Oils that have Polyunsaturated Fat are liquid at room temperature but turn solid once chilled – olive oil is an example of this type of fat.

According to Gian Luigi Russo, in a review titled “Dietary n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids: from biochemistry to clinical implications in cardiovascular prevention

Polyunsaturated Fats can be defined as:

“They are defined “essential” fatty acids since they are not synthesized in the human body and are mostly obtained from the diet”.

Polyunsaturated fats are also rich in Vitamin E which supply an ample amount of antioxidants great for combating the common cold and other ailments. Our body does not make this naturally, so we get it from the food we eat, as we also mentioned in our SugarBearHair Reviews article. Eating a moderate amount of foods that contain Polyunsaturated Fats can be beneficial to our health as they also include omega-3 and omega-6 which help to lower a number of health conditions as mentioned above. The importance of Polyunsaturated fat is also explained in a review by Elaine W-T Wong et.al titled “Facts on Fats”.

“They have established that saturated and trans-unsaturated fats (trans fats) are damaging to cardiovascular health while polyunsaturated fats, particularly the marine omega 3 fatty acids appear protective”.

In Gundry MD Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil, Polyunsaturated Fat accounts for 3% of the ingredients which is within the range of the daily intake of 15%-25% when combined with other fats in the product.

Monounsaturated Fat:

Monounsaturated Fat are healthy dietary fats that lower cholesterol in the body as well as minimizes the chances of stroke and improves heart health. It has several similar properties as Polyunsaturated fats as they are both deemed “good fats”.

If we were to differentiate between the two, we can say that good fats help to protect your body against heart disease, while bad fats pose a threat to your health.

Consuming monounsaturated fats as compared to saturated fats leads to greater fat burning, increased satiety, reduced body fat (particularly abdominal fat), and improved insulin sensitivity.

We can even go on to say that this might be one of the reasons people living in the Mediterranean manage to stay slim as their diets include carbohydrates like bread and pasta as they cook with olive oil. Going back to this study by James J. DiNicolantonio, Monounsaturated Fat vs Saturated Fat: Effects on Cardio-Metabolic Health and Obesity,

There was a study that followed overweight or obese men who ate a diet with highly saturated fat, then switched to monounsaturated fats. Each diet was followed for four (4) weeks and they lost more weight than when they were on the saturated fat diet even though they ate the same number of calories.

The study supports the fact that Monounsaturated Fats are good fats because they facilitate weight loss as well as improve heart health.

Verdict

The ingredients used in Gundry MD Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil are approved as high sources of nutrients that help to lower cholesterol, improve heart health, and are filled with antioxidants to help the body function the way it should.

We found that although saturated fats are deemed as the bad fats of the trio, when combined with the other two ingredients, it balances out Gundry MD Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil as a viable product.

Finally, some fats are better than others. Good fats include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Bad ones include industrial-made trans fats and saturated fats fall somewhere in the middle.

Good olive oil to maintain health

By Emma J.

Overall Experience:

Since I have started using Gundry MD’s Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oil in my daily diet, I have noticed an increase in my energy levels. It has also helped me with digestion and well-being. I was searching for a good olive oil since long, think this is the one. It has a slight bitter taste, but that is negligible.

A great product indeed

By Amelia Davis

Overall Experience:

I am a health freak and I usually have this habit of experimenting with food products. I was previously using a specific rice bran oil but after having seen this, I decided to try it out. And it’s hard to believe but I’m hooked to this now. It’s great in taste- just the perfect amount of zing that an olive oil should have and feels amazing when mixed with a salad. And the results would surely blow you
